Dickey Orphanage

Tamdrin ‘Mama’ Dadhon sold her family business, gathered the proceeds of the teahouse and with 300,000 Yuan and a lot of courage started Dickey´s Orphanage in Lhasa, Tibet´s capital, on September 10th 2002. In Tibetan ‘diki’ means ‘fine’ and ‘happiness’.

At the moment Dickey´s is home to 73 children. Most of them are between six and nine years of age. The youngest is ten months old. They all get lodging, tuition and medical aid. Because a lot of the children don´t know where or when they were born, September 10th is everybody´s birthday – a big party! The parents of these children died because of illness or accidents. Some children were abandoned because their parents saw no way out of their miserable situation or fled to neighbouring countries. At Dickey´s these children are given a chance to a new start in life.

Amala ‘mama’ Dadhon receives financial support from local business men and international donations. There are, however, no official government grants. As such Dickey is a private initiative. They have some staff, including the schoolbus driver and a Tibetan teacher. Thanks to a recent substantial donation, Dickey´s Orphanage could fullfill its dream of building a proper home.

Dickey Orpanage has a new home!

March 12th, 2007

Dickey Orphanage was able to purchase 2000m² of land just outside of Lhasa, on the road to Drepung Monastery. In June 2007 the authorities granted the building permit. The orphanage staff worked with the constructors to help minimize the costs. In the Spring of 2008 the children moved into their new home. They now have proper beds, a kitchen, a dining room, a computer room, a handicraft area (with weaving loom), a beautiful souvenir shop for the visitors and a basketball field in the courtyard. All this required money. You can support the project by donating money to account number : 001-4888888-67 For international money transfers (for people outside of …
